EBA Recognizes 2017 Project of the Year Award Winners

EBA was proud to work on many innovative, outstanding projects in 2017, but recently we recognized the best-of-the-best with our 2017 Project of the Year Awards. So, without further ado, let’s take a closer look at this year’s winners!

Small Project of the Year—824 N Calvert Street Lofts

The Calvert Street Lofts are a 56-unit apartment community in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood that also incorporates a 25-car garage and 10,000 square feet of retail space. Inspired by the latest trends from Soho to Singapore, the community is on the cutting edge of contemporary interiors and new construction. The property’s private, secured parking garage is also the first of its kind in the area.

The project involved retrofitting several existing large rowhomes into additional residential floors, new interiors, private parking, and first-floor retail space.

Reusing the existing buildings’ “bones” to create the new loft-style living proved that creating a beautiful new structure does not require demolishing the existing structure. Reusing and retrofitting existing structures reduced the need for new material, slashed the amount of material sent to landfills, and maintained the aesthetic of the surrounding neighborhood.

EBA provided structural engineering design services from start to finish for the $17 million renovation project.

Large Project of the Year—Anacostia River Tunnel

The Anacostia River Tunnel extends from Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in northeast DC to the Poplar Point Pumping Station in southeast DC. The 12,500-foot-long, 23-foot-wide tunnel is approximately 100 feet underground and includes six deep, large-diameter shafts to serve as access points for the tunnel; two diversion chambers; and four odor control vaults.

The project is part of DC Water’s Long Term Control Plan for the District’s combined sewer system, which will prevent sewage overflows into Rock Creek, the Anacostia River, and the Potomac River.

EBA provided geotechnical instrumentation installation, monitoring and reporting, pre- and post-construction condition surveys, environmental sampling, and construction safety management for the project. As part of the geotechnical instrumentation program, EBA produced and reported data daily for over 2,000 geotechnical sensors and hosted the data in an electronic database.

Selection Criteria

EBA’s Project of the Year Award nominees are judged based on their success at exceeding client needs; uniqueness; innovation; scope and significance; social, economic, and sustainable impacts; level of difficulty; and project constraints.

Congratulations to EBA’s project teams for their achievements! Thank you for your relentless commitment to excellence!
