EBA conducted a constructability and long-term value engineering review that resulted in a complete redesign of several critical elements including the proposed bridge, retaining walls, and roadway construction details. The previously proposed bridge was a painted steel beam bridge with expansion joints, and EBA’s value engineered proposed bridge was a precast, prestressed concrete slab bridge with the problematic expansion joints eliminated.
EBA also revised the bridge span and alignment to remedy constructability issues adjacent to the stream; performed all geotechnical subsurface investigations, foundation, and bridge engineering; and delivered a completed design in approximately 4 months. The proposed retaining walls were redesigned as a cantilevered concrete wall to reduce maintenance costs, and an aesthetic treatment application was applied.
