Lane Place Pedestrian Bridge Emergency Replacement
EBA helped DDOT complete this emergency bridge replacement within the established budget and schedule, in compliance with all design documents and regulatory requirements, and without compromise to safety or quality.
The project, required after a Mack truck hit and caused the original pedestrian bridge over southbound DC 295 to collapse, created a new, wider, and ADA-compliant bridge with increased vertical clearance over the highway, enhanced lighting, and an additional set of stairs for better access.
Project complexities involved minimizing disruptions for residents, businesses, and highway users, along with providing strict oversight of the 40 required micropiles—some up to 80 feet deep. EBA achieved time and cost savings by using advanced laser 3D scanning and mobile apps to collect, record, and share real-time project data. Prefabricated components also helped minimize the construction duration and costs.
Daily construction management activities included monitoring, inspection, and testing; monitoring utility relocation/replacement; reviewing and approving pay items; providing independent cost estimates and recommendations; and chairing meetings.
The new bridge has reconnected communities, boosted property values, reduced the likelihood of accidents, improved pedestrian flow, optimized potential economic growth, and positively affected quality of life for residents, local businesses, and the DC area at large.
This project received a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards competition.
