Carter Avenue Traffic Calming
Carter Avenue, which connects Annapolis Road and Lanham-Severn Road through a residential neighborhood, has seen a significant increase in traffic. To protect residents and road users, EBA designed traffic-calming curb bump-outs to serve as choke points on Carter Avenue. These bump-outs restrict the width of the two travel lanes to help slow traffic. The bump-outs were designed to avoid conflicts with existing driveways.
To meet stormwater management requirements, EBA developed a new site-specific bioretention treatment concept for the bump-out areas, followed by a detailed design for six of the eight bump-out locations. The project also included topographic surveys to assure proper drainage at the new bump-out locations and signing and marking upgrades.
