Susanne Bowman was one of the first graduates from EBA’s construction management and inspection trainee program. Now she’s an office engineer and inspector supporting EBA’s contracts with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). She pauses to answer our 10 questions in celebration of Women in Construction Week.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Bel Air, Maryland (Harford County). I currently live in Parkville, Maryland.

What do you do for EBA?
I am an office engineer/inspector for SHA District 3. I am currently working on a project in Hyattstown, Maryland.

What inspired you to pursue a career in construction?
An EBA employee told me about the EBA construction management and inspection trainee program. I submitted my résumé, was accepted, and started in late October 2015.

How long have you worked in the construction field?
I have been in construction for just over 3 years.

What’s the most interesting project you have worked on?
I am currently working on a $7.3 million, federally funded bridge project that is extremely interesting. It involves replacing a single-span bridge on MD 355 over Little Bennett Creek with a much larger, two-span bridge. The project includes removing the existing bridge, constructing the new bridge, reconstructing the roadway, and constructing and removing a temporary roadway and bridge to keep traffic flowing. It also involves considerable erosion and sediment control work for the creek.

What is your favorite thing about your job?
I enjoy learning, and my job offers many opportunities to learn new things. I can grow my knowledge from something new every day.

What are you most proud of so far in your career?
I’m most proud of the respect and success I’ve earned. I strive to be the best I can be.

When you aren’t at work, what are you most likely doing?
I’m spending time at home with my kids and boyfriend. We enjoy our family time watching TV or playing games.

Why is construction a good career choice?
There is always a need for the construction field. Construction also offers great potential for growth and is always a challenge.

What advice do you have for encouraging the next generation of women in construction?
Don’t think that you cannot succeed in a “man’s field.” Women bring as much to this job as men do. There is much to learn and room for personal growth. Don’t let anyone intimidate you. Be yourself. This field is as rewarding as any career you could find.
